In the early hours of 18 May 1980, on the eve of a first tour in America, Ian Curtis, lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division, hanged himself in the kitchen of his house. At the time of his death, his mental health was failing as a result of the epilepsy and attempting to balance his musical ambitions with his marriage.
