Rita Barros is the artist/photographer invited for the fifteenth issue of Kioskzine with her work titled “Random shoes (no sneakers)”. “Random Shoes (no sneakers)” - Portrait of a city In March 2024, I began this project of photographing the shoes of strangers on the streets of New York City, just as winter boots gave way to lighter spring styles. The decision to photograph only shoes, in a city dominated by sneakers, made the challenge even greater, and much more interesting. The gray concrete sidewalks created the perfect urban backdrop. In the fall, when the heavy boots returned, I felt the cycle was closing and I stopped photographing. Looking back, these images have become more than just photos of shoes—they have become portraits of the city itself, capturing the diversity of styles, attitudes, and budgets at every step.
